  17. <p>A Russian report on American POWS may have been real but not
  18. right

  20. <p>     Perhaps something was lost in the translation. The Russian
  21. document suggesting there were 600 more Americans in North
  22. Vietnam than were admitted by the Vietnamese prompted General
  23. John Vessey, the President's special envoy on POWs, to fly to
  24. Hanoi to check again. "It is an authentic Russian document," he
  25. reported, but added, "we know a great deal of the information
  26. ((in it)) is inaccurate." A faded ledger provided by Vietnam--and supported by U.S. documents--shows far fewer POWs than the
  27. report claims. Hanoi also disputes the document's assertion that
  28. its Politburo met on a certain day to be briefed on the captured
  29. Americans.
